2. How did you get your start in showing and breeding Whippets?

David – My first introduction to showing was surprisingly at a race meet in 1982.  At that time the American Whippet Club sponsored the National Point Racing (NPR) Program.  The best attribute of this program was the dual-purpose nature of their events, “form following function” as many like to say.  Racing was held in the morning with the same dogs showing in an afternoon match, much like the Continental Whippet Alliance (CWA) does today.  At this race meet I was encouraged to show Sophie, my first whippet. She won Best in Match under judge Douglas Arthur and I was hooked on showing and the Whippet breed.

On the flip side, my first breedings were not as successful as my first showing experience.  My first two litters out of Sophie did not “click” as they say.  She was first bred to Ch. Sheridan Marial’s Nikita which was her grand-sire.  That litter didn’t take.  For her second litter Sophie was bred to Ch. Snowflight’s Social Status, a Nikita son.  What attracted me to this dog was the top side of his pedigree which came down from John Shelton’s Sheridan bloodlines.  The bottom side of the pedigree was also impressive, filled with Stoney Meadow dogs, known for their beautiful type.

I then leased Sophie’s sister, Affinity Chevere¢, from Carol Juelfs.  Chevy proved to be a much better producer.  She was bred to SBIS Ch. Locar’s Waterford producing my first bred champions, Ch. Dashing Debonair and Ch. Dashing Through the Snow.  I then acquired Affinity Scout’s Honor, Lucy, from Carol Juelfs.  Lucy was to become my foundation bitch.  Lucy was bred twice, first to Ch. Affinity the Lionhearted and then to Ch. Ailne Affinity Dreamer, a NSBIS Ch. Roving Roulette son.  Both litters were line-bred on SBIS Ch. Affinity Windrose Kemo-Sabi ROM.  This approach was quite successful I believe because Kemo-Sabi/Scout’s mother was from a long line of beautifully producing bitches.  Lucy’s first litter produced Ch. Dashing the Lioness ROMX, the top producing whippet dam for 2000, and her second litter produced Ch. Dashing Nieohn Cabernet Red ROM.
